This article will discuss how to wrap a knife handle with paracord using the strider weave. We will be wrapping a combat search and rescue tool also known as a CSART. It is recommended, but not necessary, that you pre-wrap your knife handle with gutted paracord. This will make it so you cannot see any of the original handle and gives better texture to the finished weave. We will be using SurvivorCord or WarriorCord.
Start the pre-wrap at the base of the blade and wrap over the starting end of paracord to hold in in place. Continue the wrap so that it is tight against the knife, making sure the wraps are not overlapping, but flush with each other. Once you get to the end of the wrap at the bottom of the handle, simply put the last wrap over your finger and put the remaining cord through it and then pull tight. Cut the excess and melt the end to the wrap, pressing it flat with your lighter.
For the strider weave on a CSART you will need about 10’ of paracord. The length of paracord you will need will be determined by the length of your knife handle, but 10’ should be enough for most handles. Fold your length of paracord in half in equal lengths, and melt the ends to prevent fray and make them easier to work with. Start with the knife blade towards you, and bring the center point of the paracord to the base of the blade. Hold the paracord tightly in place with your thumb and index finger.
Turn the knife over so that the two lengths of paracord are coming towards you. Take your other hand and stick your two fingers in between the pieces of paracord and twist them together twice and then bring the ends of the paracord over the knife so that they are facing away from you. Adjust your weave so that the twisted part is centered on the handle.
Turn the knife over and repeat the same process, keeping the cords tight. You do not want to let them go slack because it will put slack into the previous weaves. You also want to make sure you are twisting the cords in the same direction with each weave. Adjust each weave so that it is center on the knife handle before moving on to the next.
Continue the strider weave until you reach two holes on the end of the CSART. Put the ends of the paracord through the wholes that correspond to the side the cord is on. Make sure you are putting the cord through on the side that your last twist was made. Turn the knife over and tie the remaining cord with a simple overhand knot, and if you want and have enough cord left, tie a loop knot for the addition of a lanyard.
Lastly, cut the remaining ends and melt them into the knot to prevent it from coming undone. That’s it, you now have a knife handle wrapped with paracord using the strider weave.
